A Family-Run Appliance Repair Story

When you let someone into your home to work on your appliances, you want to know who they are and what they stand for. Here is the short version: Plaza Appliance Service Co is a family-run appliance repair business that has been trusted in Charlotte since 1952, and the motto it started with still guides every service call.

The longer version is below: where we started, who runs it today, what our motto means when we are standing in your kitchen, and what to expect when you call.

Serving Charlotte since 1952

Owen Johnson founded Plaza Appliance Service Co in 1952 with a motto that fit on one line: Fair prices. Quality work. Every time. He mentored Chris Raeker and passed on what he knew about fixing appliances, and when the time came, Chris took over from Owen. Today Chris and his brother Steve run it together.

That handoff is the heart of who we are. Appliance repair is a trade learned by doing, with an experienced hand nearby to explain what a sound means or why a part gave out, and that is how knowledge has moved through this business for more than 70 years: one generation teaching the next. When you call, that experience is what you get.

We are a multi-year Angie's Super Service Award recipient, and we are proud of it. We are just as proud that so many of the families we serve have called us before, and that repeat business means a great deal to us.

What our motto means for your repair

  • Fair prices: Fair begins with knowing the price before any work starts. After the diagnosis you hear the total price for the repair, and the decision is yours. Seniors get a discount on repairs; mention it when you call.
  • Quality work: Quality is a repair that fixes the actual problem and holds. Every repair we make is backed by a 90-day parts warranty and a 90-day labor warranty, and if the same problem comes back inside that window, you call us. Chris and Steve know the work firsthand, and in an operation this small every repair carries our name.
  • Every time: Every time means the fifth visit gets the same care as the first. Same-day service is available when the schedule allows, you get a two-hour arrival window instead of a whole day waiting, and the person at your door knows the appliance in front of them. We work on residential appliances only, so homes like yours are the only kind of work we do.

Six words, and they are still the standard every one of our repairs is measured against.

Who shows up at your door

We are a small, family-run operation, and that works in your favor. Small means fewer handoffs between your first call and the finished repair, and it means owners who know appliances firsthand.

Here is how a visit goes. Your technician arrives during the two-hour window you were given, knowing what you told us on the phone. The appliance gets a proper diagnosis rather than a guess, and you hear what is wrong in plain language along with the price to fix it. With your OK, the work gets done, and the appliance is tested before we call the job finished.

Clear a path to the appliance if you can, and leave built-in appliances where they are, since they are heavy and easy to damage. If the model number is easy to find (usually on a label inside the door or along the frame), have it handy, and if it is not, that is fine too.

Questions about our family business

How long have you been in business?

Since 1952, when Owen Johnson founded our business. That is more than 70 years of repairing household appliances for homes across the greater Charlotte area in North Carolina and South Carolina, and it is where our line "Trusted in Charlotte since 1952" comes from. Today we are family-run, led by Chris Raeker and his brother Steve.

Who are Chris and Steve?

Chris Raeker learned the trade from founder Owen Johnson and took over from him. Today Chris and his brother Steve run our business together. They are the family in family-run, and the long tradition of passing trade knowledge from one generation to the next is what you get when you call.

What does family-run mean for my repair?

It means the owners, Chris and Steve, are responsible for your repair, with fewer handoffs between your first call and the finished job. It means the people behind your repair know appliances firsthand. And it means repeat customers matter to us: many of the families we serve have called us before, and we would like you to be one of them.

Do you offer a senior discount?

Yes. Seniors get a discount on repairs. Just mention it when you call or when your technician arrives, and the discount comes off the repair price. If you are calling to set up a repair for a parent or grandparent, let us know so we can apply it for them.

What warranty comes with a repair?

Every repair we make is covered by a 90-day parts warranty and a 90-day labor warranty. If the same problem comes back within 90 days, call us and have your invoice handy so we can look up the work. We stand behind what we fix.

Which areas do you serve?

We serve homes across the greater Charlotte area in North Carolina and South Carolina: from Gastonia and Mount Holly to Matthews and Waxhaw, north to Huntersville, Cornelius, and Denver around Lake Norman, and across the state line to Fort Mill and Tega Cay. Give us your address when you call and we will set a time.

How do I reach you?

Call 704-366-2126, Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, or Saturday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. We are closed Sunday. If you would rather not call, send the request form on our contact page and we will call you back to set a time.

Schedule a Service

Send the details and we will call you during business hours to schedule your two-hour arrival window. In a hurry? Call 704-366-2126.

Only if it is easy to read. Please do not move a heavy or built-in appliance to find it.

Sending this form does not book a time; we call you to schedule. If an appliance sparks, smells like burning, or leaks near wiring, stop using it and call us at 704-366-2126. If you smell gas, do not touch plugs or switches: get everyone outside and call your gas utility first.

Give us a call and see why families keep coming back

You now know who we are: Owen Johnson started us in 1952, and Chris and his brother Steve carry the work on today. The rest is simple. Call Plaza Appliance Service Co at 704-366-2126, tell us which appliance is acting up, and we will set a time to come fix it at a fair price. Or send the online request form and we will call you back.

I have been going to Plaza for all of my appliance repair needs since I became a homeowner fifteen years ago and once again they have knocked it out of the park. I was having issues with my dryer. Yancey from Plaza promptly came to our rescue, having everything up and running within thirty minutes. He was kind and professional, and left the workspace clean. Because of there competency, professionalism and competitive pricing, I will continue recommending Plaza to all of my friends and family.

Plaza Appliance fixed the lighting in what by today’s standards in an old refrigerator. They had to come out to our home twice; first to find a model number that I couldn’t find and then to make the actual repair once they located a hard to find part. They were pleasant to work with and quick to respond. They were willing to go the extra mile while other repair firms were unwilling to look at the problem once they found out the age of our fridge! Highly recommend.

Amazing experience. Came out the same day to diagnose a faulty dishwasher. Returned the next with a part to get it back up and running again. Communication, speed, and quality of service at this level is hard to come by these days. Thank you for sparing me an extra chore!!!
